Turnup.Travel started off as a tour operator for new age travellers but we realised we have the power through our lens, reach and our often overlooked stories to inspire people, educate our audiences and change perspectives about destinations and its people through curating themed city tours.
Turnup.Travel has partnered with Baraza Media Lab to host African Media Festival delegates for a well curated and chaperoned media ecosystem tour of Nairobi.
We will assemble at Baraza Media Lab at 8am for coffee and snacks before heading out in one of the most lit souped up Nairobi mathrees to Kuona Artists Collective to get a sense of Nairobi’s art scene which has quickly grown to one of the busiest visual-art hubs in the region. Kuona is also a strong advocate for cultural exchange, hosting international artists’ workshops and residencies and assisting established artists to participate in exchange throughout the world- Kuona acts as a hub for its African network.
After that, we will pass by Africa Uncensored, founded as an independent media house by Kenya’s finest investigative journalists. You will learn how they investigate, expose and empower the public with nothing but the truth. Thereafter we will visit Debunk Media which brings together journalists, data scientists, filmmakers, illustrators and animators to try and make sense of the world through the art of storytelling…Oh btw; there’s even a doctor on the team.
You will then visit Nation Media Group founded by His Highness Aga Khan in 1959 for a tour of the largest and listed independent media house in East and Central Africa. Here you will learn about how they started with Taifa Leo – the first Swahili newspaper in Kenya, Daily Nation and Sunday Nation which were first printed in 1960 to their current portfolio and how they are securing their future with strategic acquisitions and investments in the ever evolving media landscape.
Lunch break – a culinary experience of Kenyan style bbq with accompaniments and soft drinks.
In the afternoon we will head out to Buni Media at the Godown Arts Centre in Nairobi’s Industrial Area cofounded by Cartoonist Gado Mwampembwa and Marie Lora-Mungai who used Buni Media as the production vehicle for the production of popular The XYZ Show. You will learn how Buni uses the power of storytelling, media, and creative expression to fight for an open and accountable society, participatory governance, Freedom of Expression, and to grow the creative ecosystem.
Tour ends at 4pm and we will drop you
The bus will drop delegates at Baraza Media Lab for an evening cocktail and wait for the guests to finish and drop you at Radisson Blu Hotel in Upperhill and hotels in Westlands and CBD.
End of experience: 8pm.
