The Northern region of Kenya is vast and scenic. It is the home of a variety of tribes and has remained comparatively inaccessible until now. Ranging from the lush highland green of the southern side of the Mathews range and Samburu National Park to the red sands of the northern borders with Ethiopia in the Chalbi desert, its terrain is varied, mysterious, and extraordinarily beautiful.

Depart from Nairobi and drive north past Nanyuki and the beautiful farmlands of Timau to arrive at Sabache Camp for Lunch. After lunch, embark on a hike with porters to the top of Mt. Ololokwe for wild camping. The views from the top are perfect for sunset and sunrise the next morning. Bush prepared meals by the Chef at the top before enjoying a night of stargazing and bonfire.
In the Morning descend after Sunrise back to the camp at the base. After breakfast drive North to Ngurunit an oasis surrounded by tens of mountains and ranges popularly known as the Ndoto. On the way you get to see beautiful ranges. The scenery is surreal. Check-in at Golbo a basic guesthouse for lunch and overnight with views of the mountains around. You may visit the natural rock pools and slide in the afternoon after arrival.
In the day hike to hike Mt Poi (2050m) which resembles world’s largest bread loaf from some angles, it’s a technical climber’s dream. However, there is trekking access that is a hard hike but ends with rewarding views. Return to camp for the night.
In the morning visit the tiny interesting village with captivating traditionally dressed Samburu people living in simple, yet elegantly woven, grass huts and buy some souvenirs. Take a dive in the rockslides spring once again before heading south to Mt Kulal, which is a hiker’s paradise of volcanic origin, lava fields define the landscape in the surrounding area and the mountain’s sides are steep and often slashed by deep canyons. The location of a peak as high as Mount Kulal in the middle of one of the driest regions of East Africa not only makes it unique topographically but also contributes to the particular ecosystem services the mountain and its forest provide the region. Spend the night camping at the top.
On this day explore some of the wild treks up the mountain. The mountain range is vast and has such rich biodiversity to keep you amazed. Return to sleep at a guesthouse in the mountains after the earlier night of camping.
After a 6 to 7 hours hike head out south to Loiyangalani, Later in the day drive out and visit the famous El Molo people living on the shores of the lake and are 100% dependent on the lake for survival. If you are out for some adventure you can visit Southern Island by boat. Evening sundowner on the lake is a lively way to end the day. Overnight at one of the lodges in town.
Heading further up towards Ethiopia is one of the most hidden secrets of the north, Sibiloi National Park. The park holds numerous fossil deposits that have resulted in the discovery of some of the world’s oldest hominid fossils from nearly four decades of research in the area. Visit the nearby Koobi fora museums. This site museum has three components. The first one is the main site museum located at the Koobi Fora ridge and overlooking the lake. The second is the crocodile and tortoise sites which are insitu exhibits and the third is the elephant site presenting a complete elephant skeleton.
After a visit to the cradle of mankind, drive southeast to North Horr an oasis at the edge of the Chalbi desert. This is the perfect location to tour the dunes and also enjoy a night of stargazing. Overnight at basic community Manyattas.
In the morning embark on the crossing of the Chalbi. The vast landscapes and sand dunes will amaze you.Head out to Marsabit via Kalacha, Maikona, and Chalbi. It’s a fun and adventurous ride, dinner and overnight in the cool forested town of Marsabit.
In the morning drive up the mountain to the beautiful lake paradise. You will be in time to see the animals come out for a morning drink and splash, before heading out back to the city. Stopover at Nanyuki for lunch then proceed with the journey to Nairobi to arrive early in the evening.
