At a time when digital behemoths are touting “HQ2s”, the Center for the Future of Work invited turnup.travel/new to represent Nairobi as Cognizant takes a journey around the world to the 21 places (many of them unexpected) that will emerge over the next decade and become the new crucibles of future innovation, growth, economic creativity, rejuvenation, and renaissance – 21 locations where the future of work gets done.
First, each location was researched and visited by analysts from the Center for the Future of
Work. They came to Nairobi looking for people who inspire their community and places where innovation is part of everyday life. Then will follow each visit with a written report, detailing exactly why these places are set to thrive over the next ten years.
To complement their findings, the Center for the Future of Work invited seven filmmakers from
around the world to tell the story of the city they call home. They figured that there is no better
medium than film when it comes to developing a strong sense of place, and hope that connecting
with local filmmakers will lead the project out of their comfort zone and into a creative collaboration
imbued with emerging talent on both sides of the camera.
The film series covered seven of the most exciting locations in the world right now; Dundee,
Atlanta, Sacramento, Santander, Nairobi, Chengdu and São Paulo. Traversing food, culture, art,
technology, and business, each film will offer a unique portrait of a place and its huge potential.
Filmmakers were asked to foreground what is special about their city, and crews approached the project with a highly personal perspective on the best spots to eat, drink and unwind. In Nairobi, Samuel Wanjohi directed the project shot by Maurice Murage and we’re grateful to have been featured alongside entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers, and policymakers.
Part of the screen time was offered to individuals and businesses thriving in the present day, with their emphasis is firmly on the technological future and gave an account of day-to-day life in each city,
touching on its traditions in the process, but their focus was forward-facing. turnup.travel/new also provided footage of the city of Nairobi from our archives for the project.
